Foley Catheter Ripening versus medication studies

The question is posed to me fairly often about the use of misoprostol (Cytotec), cervadil or prepadil for ripening prior to induction with Pitocin.

For all women, but especially for the VBAC mother or a mother with an otherwise scarred uterus (myomectomy or other uterine surgeries as well) this is something to really consider prior to an induction.  A foley catheter ripening in lieu of medications when an induction must occur appears to be the best route with the least amount of risks and negative consequences.

  • Foley catheter ripening does work well, and is a great option in many cases, though most likely it operates through promoting local prostaglandin release, which ultimately is similar to exogenous prostaglandins (misoprostol, cervidil)

  • These are GREAT! I have seen a few births induced with the foley bulb. It seems like a great way to do soften the cervix without drugs.
