Can't wait to share w my mommy friends. Your sample birth plan & suggestions about rethinking the name of birth "plan" were so immensely helpful in preparing for my VBAC. Ultimately I titled my letter to myself & my labor support as birth views. We had a great discussion before & even a few durin labor when indications for some changes arised. Having gone through some of the possibilities made it easier for MW to accept the organicness of birth & move on to focusing back on relaxing for baby. Ty!

I tell people my real date. Yes the calls at the end are annoying, but I'm trying to show people that babies can be born "late" and still be perfectly fine.

I have to say though, it's not just friends and family that are the problem. I've seen plenty of pregnant women who do nothing buy complain once they hit the 36 week mark that their baby needs to get out. It really bothers me b/c I had a friend who would have loved to have made it to her due date, but her baby was born at 27 weeks, and my friend died 2 months later.

Lovely birth plan but it does sound like lots of intervention could still take place here that's not necessary eg baby eye ointment, IV preparation etc. I live in the uk and when I started looking into how I wanted to give birth I was shocked at how medicalised given birth has become, especially in USA! It's such a shame this is the way it's become and that we are deemed as terrible mothers for wanting a completely natural and drug and intervention free labour! Good luck to everyone.

Great points! I like to suggest to moms to ask someone to arrange an online care calendar like http://www.carecalendar.org/ or http://www.mealtrain.com. It makes it a lot easier for people to sign up and help with meals, childcare for siblings.

Buying some time for her to have a postpartum doula will be invaluable to her family.

If she's planning to breastfeed, ask her if she has located a local La Leche League support group that can give her support, or if you're a breastfeeding mom, let her know she can get some support from you.

While I agree that letting things happen on their own is almost always the best course of action, having this information on hand when pressed with induction is really useful. As a secondary VBAC mom, who has gestational diabetes, my providers are insisting on delivering by 39 weeks. I'm a surrogate, so I have to basically do what they say. If my choices are induction or RCS, I'm going to go for the induction if it has a chance of being successful.

i'm a first-time mom, but when i my doula told me about placenta encapsulation, i ate it up (so to speak). now all my friends who are having babies are doing it, too...and the ones who have older babies can definitely tell the difference. i wrote about my experience here: http://www.tulipandthelma.com/2011/03/please-pass-placenta.html

I don't believe in induction. It is almost never the right thing to do. Especially wrong if people are just "in a hurry to get things going". Just wait. Nature knows how to do it. Just wait till your body is ready. DO NOT let anyone rush you. Try a birth center or a home birth. Stay away from anyone who believes birth should happen on a schedule. It will always fool you and make it's own schedule every time.
