this is anecdotal, but just this morning I was at a play area and chatting w/ another mom. I mentioned I had had a cesarean w/ my first and vbac's w/ my 2nd and 3rd. She said she had an elective cesarean w/ her first.
I'm always stunned by this as well and asked her why.

She indicated she had had abdominal surgery once before and knew what it was like. She wanted pain she was familiar w/ rather than unknown pain.

Moms are so fearful of labor pain that some will choose surgery over it. Go figure.

This is great! I've been looking to create a handout on nutrition during pregnancy for my doula clients, and this will be a great place to get started. I'll make sure to send them to this post too!

Thank you, thank you-- this was the most beautiful VBAC video I've ever seen. It gives me inspiration for my upcoming labor in April.

That is a very good question? If it was them would they want to do it? Allow it? Be okay with it? Are you on the ICAN yahoo group or in touch with the local Florida chapter?

I live in Key West FL and I am currently 10 weeks pregnant with my third child.
My first was a vaginal birth and my second was a c-section, my Dr. that did the c-section was very supportive and told me there was no reason i couldn't try for a VBAC next time around.
Now, 2 years and 400 miles later I'm finding myself in a pickle, there are NO midwives and NO OB's that support VBACs here plus the hospital has a ban on VBAC.
I am shocked and outraged that a Doctor or hospital thinks they can make me have unnecessary surgery, I am appalled at the flip attitude our society has about c-sections and I feel betrayed by everyone involved in making safe VBACs so hard to have.
I wonder if men had to be laid out naked, strapped to a table, numb from the armpits down, cut open and digging around inside of them while they were fully awake and aware of it all...would they consider that "routine"? Would they easily agree to it when there was NO MEDICAL REASON for it?

I took a HypnoBirthing class when I was pregnant with my 1st son and their approach toward the "pain" was so unique it forever changed my perception of the sensations of labor.
For me it was much more like the ache associated with hard physical endeavors such as running a marathon, than with the pain of injury, which is what I believe most women equate labor sensations with.
In my 2nd labor I experienced an even bigger shift in perception when I was able to have a greater measure of control over the sensations I felt, again with the help of hypnosis.
In my 3rd labor I don't remember feeling what most would call "pain" at all! It was a water birth so being in the tub of hot water really transformed the sensations of laboring for me.
All in all the only true pain I felt with all 3 was at the point of crowning with my 1st when I tore slightly, and during the external version needed with labor #2.
I truly believe pain in labor is partly due to perception and fear. If a woman is prepared and educated for labor correctly and her fears are dealt with adequately that sensation of pain is greatly reduced!

With an epidural women can still stay very present by not bolusing with more medication, asking to be turned and moved every 30 minutes to help baby rotate and move down, have epidural turned off prior to pushing so she can feel her bottom and the contractions to push as well as have more mobility.
